X-Noise National Focal Point - Ireland
The School of Engineering in Trinity College Dublin is the National Focal Point for Ireland within X-Noise EV Coordination Action project (FP7 – Priority Aeronautics).
Through its network structure and comprehensive workplan involving experts groups, scientific workshops, stakeholders seminars and a common information system, this project will address the aircraft noise challenges set by the ACARE 2020 Vision, by:
- evaluating EC-funded projects results and assessing their contribution to the state-of-the-art
- formulating, through development of common strategies and complementarities with national activities, priorities and key topics for future projects aimed at noise reduction at source as well as improved understanding of the impact of aircraft noise in the community
- identifying potential reinforcement of future projects partnership through expertise mapping, to foster new collaborations and promote novel ideas
- ensuring dissemination and exploitation of anticipated technology breakthroughs and scientific developments, including technical information aimed at Regulatory Bodies and Policymaking Agencies to inform on progress made in aircraft noise research
- contributing to an improved integration of the European Aircraft Noise Research community through a network of National Focal Points, including the development of local networks in new EU member states to foster participation in future projects.
To this end, a dedicated network of National Focal Points has been established together with appropriate resources tailored to their specific national situation. Amongst their responsibilities, they will identify network participants (Industry, Academia, SMEs, Stakeholders, and Policymakers), consolidate expertise mapping with a pro-active approach towards SMEs, and inform local researchers on aircraft noise research strategic priorities.

Aeroacoustics Research in Europe – 2013 Highlights
One of the yearly activities of the Aeroacoustics Specialists Committee of the Confederation of European Aerospace Societies (CEAS-ASC) is to summarise significant R&D activities in Aeroacoustics in Europe in a report which is usually published as an article in the Journal of Sound and Vibration (JSV). Acoustics Research in TCD
The research group has extensive experience in the measurement and modelling of flow structure interactions including flow induced vibration & noise, aeroacoustics, structural/acoustic interactions, unsteady combustion and heat transfer. Experimental facilities include general purpose and custom built wind tunnels. Instrumentation includes laser and hot wire anemometry for fluid flow measurement, a laser velocimeter with accelerometers and displacement transducers for vibration and condenser microphones and microphone arrays for noise/acoustic work. Signal processing techniques developed by the Group for the analysis and identification of non-linear systems have been used for validating complex models for fluid/structure interactions & aeroacoustics and for modeling unsteady combustion processes.

Training
The Institute of Acoustics is the UK's professional body for those working in acoustics, noise and vibration. It was formed in 1974 and has some 3000 members from a rich diversity of backgrounds, with engineers, scientists, educators, lawyers, occupational hygienists, architects and environmental health officers among their number. The Institute of Acoustics' Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control was set up to provide specialist academic training and has been run in Ireland through Trinity College Dublin for a number of years. The course is coordinated and taught by academic staff from Trinity as well as specialists operating in the acoustics and noise control industries in Ireland.
